  History of Thogatveer Kshatriya Samaj Solapur
 
  In ancient Vedic time, thousand years ago, Thogatveer Kshatriyas migrated from Kashi and settled down in Andhra Rayalseema area. After settling down slowly they involved Andhra Pradesh local tradition, custom, manners, and culture and accepted Andhra Pradesh’s Telugu Language as Mother Tong.

Many Thogatveer Samaj communities are living in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamilnadu. Majority of Thogatveer Kshatriya are living in Andhra Pradesh. Majority of Thogatveer Kshatriya are living in Karnool, Kadappa, Chittur, Nellore, Guntur, MahibubNagar, Rayalseema area. In Karnataka, Thogatveer community is active in Raichur, Bellary, Davangiri, Hospet, Bangalore area.
 
In between 1750-1785, Thogatveer community whose initial occupation was handloom weaving migrated from Andhra Pradesh for living. By end of 18th century many Thogatveer families migrated to Solapur for living. Mainly Udgiri, Dakka, Chila, Pujari, Nangi, Falmare, Kontam, Purud, Kandi, Habba, Chinta, Gatti, Somnath, Badganchi, Yarzal, Pola, Manchal, Chargundi and Sankarap Families Came First. That time Thogatveer families settled down Madhav Peth (Currently known as East Mangalwar Peth), Guruwar Peth, Ganesh Peth, and Sakhar Peth.


After settling down in Solapur, devotee of Shri Chowdeshwari Devi started thinking to celebrate “Jyoti Utsav”. From 1800, Thogatveer community started celebrating “Jyoti Utsav” on Shravan full moon (श्रावण शु.पौणिमा) night. During that time, community members made several changes and started fundi (group) system. In Between 1875-1880, community created five fundi. 1. Shri Gatti Fundi 2. Shri Chila Fundi 3. Shri Nangi Fundi 4. Shri Dakka Fundi 5. Shri Peddi Fundi.
Initially for 20-25 years five fundi celebrated “Jyoti Utsav”. Due to some differences some of Chila Fund members separated and created new fundi called “Shri Falmare Fund”.

At that time, community was celebrating “Jyoti Utsav” in grand scale. In parade, they were using umbrella (Chatri), Chamre (Abdagiri), colorful flags, drums, sanai etc. In Jyoti Utsav, Thogatveer were participating with devotion and singing Shri Chowdeshwari Devi devotional songs.
Currently there are eight fundi and brief information of each fundi is as follows:
1. Shri Gatti Fundi
Shri Gatti Fundi (Somwar Peth) was established between years of 1875 to 1880. Shri Gatti Fundi (Somwar Peth) founder was Shri. Munappa Tipanna Gatti. Shri Somwar Peth Gatti Fundi bought land and built building for Jyoti Utsav.
2.Shri Peddi Fundi
Shri Peddi Fundi was established between years of 1885 to 1905. Shri Peddi Fundi founder was Nagappa Madappa Peddi. Shri Peddi Fundi bought land for Jyoti Utsav. Building construction will be started later.
3.Shri Chila Fundi
Shri Chila Fundi was established between years of 1875 to 1880. Shri Chintalyya Kankayya Chila was founder member of Shri Chila Fundi.
4.Shri Nangi Fundi
Shri Nangi Fundi was established between years of 1875 to 1880. Shri Sidramppa Nangi was founder member of Shri Nangi Fundi. Nangi Fundi bought land and built two story building for Jyoti Utsav. Shri Nangi Fundi officially registered as “Shri Thogatveer Kshatriya Nangi Fundi Seva Sangham”. The activity and strategy of fund is managed by five members trust.
5.Shri Dakka Fundi
Shri Dakka Fundi was established between years of 1875 to 1880. Shri Vyakanna Kuchanna Dakka was founder member of Shri Dakka Fundi.
6.Shri Chowdeshwari Fundi
Shri Falmari was established in 1910. Previously many of Falmari fundi members were belong to Shri Chila Fundi. In 1959, Fundi head gave resignation to Samaj President. On September 27, 1959 with consensus Falmari Fund renamed to Shri Chowdeshwari Fundi and Fundi head would be the president of Shri Thogatveer Samaj.
7.Shri Sakhar Peth Gatti Fundi
Shri Sakhar Peth Fundi was established in between 1880 – 1890. Shri Vitoba Sayanna Gatti was founder member of Shri Sakhar Peth Gatti Fundi.
8.Shri Nalgeshi Fundi
In between 1935 – 1940 many Thogatveer Kshatriyas migrated to Solapur from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Initially they were belonging to Falmari Fundi. Then later Ramchandrappa Battul took initiative and established Shri Surapur Fundi. Shri Bhimanna Hanmantu Nalgeshi was found head of Shri Surapur Fundi. Later in 1950, with consensus Fundi renamed from Shri Surapur Fundi to Shri Nalgeshi fundi. Nalgeshi Fundi bought land and built two story building for Jyoti Utsav. On December 20, 2005, Nalgeshi Fundi officially registered as “Shri Thogatveer Kshatriya Nalgeshi Fund”. The activity and strategy of fund is managed by seven members trust.

Establishment of Shri Thogatveer Kshatriya Samaj
Until 1930, there were seven fundi existed and every year entire Thogatveer community were celebrating “Jyoti Utsav” with enthusiastically and with devotion. Further Thogatveer community members started thinking to form “Thogatveer Kshatriya Samaj” officially. In April 1931 “Shri Chandika Verprasadik Thogati Tarun Samaj” was established and later in 1941, Samaj was renamed to “Shri Chowdeshwari Varprasadik Thogatveer Kshatriya Samaj Solapur”.
The founding executive officers were as follows:
President – Shri Mahadev Bhusappa Udgiri
Vice President – Shri Hanmantappa Vitoba Kontam
Secretary – Shri Narsappa Tukaram Chinta
Treasurer – Shri Namdevppa Hanmayya Udgiri

Shri Chowdeshwari Devi Temple Land Purchase:
After establishment of Thogatveer Samaj, for Land purchase separate committee was formed. Committee members found 10200 Sq. Ft land in Jodbhavi Peth. That time Solapur Muncipal member Shri Hanmantppa Vitoba Kontam and Shri Baburao Jakkal (Mayor) helped for purchasing land from Solapur Municipal for Rs. 2,550.

Shri Chowdeshwari Devi Temple Construction:
Initially Shri Chowdeshwari Devi temple Bhoomi Pujan and foundation program was performed by Shri Jagatguru Shankaracharya in 1939. First temple interior part (In Marathi called गाभारा) was built and it took seven years. In 1949, main entrance door (महाद्वार) was built. Temple construction was completed in 1954.

Shri Chowdeshwari Devi idol and Pran Pratishthapana
While temple construction was progressing, a meeting was called on June 17, 1951 to discuss to make Shri Chowdeshwari Devi idol. Total 42 members attended the meeting and 21 members sub-committee was formed. Sub-committee called a meeting, and different opinions were discussed. Shri Namdevappa Udgiri suggested that Shri Chowdeshwari Devi idol should be like Nandavaram Chowdeshwari Devi and it should get crafted from Shri Kshetra Kashi and everyone approved Shri Namdevappa Udgiri’s suggestion unanimously. A team with Photographer Shri Bhimnalliikar went to Nandavaram and provided very minute details about how the Devi idol should be. Then a team went to Kashi and searched very experienced artisan to craft Devi’s idol. Finally a team gave contract to Jangamwadi artist Shri Bholanath Mishri and he took 15 months to complete Shri Chowdeshwari Devi’s idol and sent completion letter on May 20, 1953. On August 17, 1953, a team brought Devi’s idol from Kashi. On June 20, 1954 a meeting called and decision was made to perform Shri Chowdeshwari Devi idol Pran Pratishthapana on Thursday Sravan Sudha Shashti August 5, 1954. Total 5 days program were arranged and on Sravan Sudha Shashti August 5, 1954 Pran Pratishthapana process was completed. Many Thogatveer members were participated in 5 days Pran Pratishthapana program.

Shikhar Construction (1976-1977)
Shri Chowdeshwari Temple’s Shikhar construction was started on the auspicious occasion of Diwali Balipratipada. Samaj gave contract to famous Tamilnadu artist Shri Mariyappa Stapati to construct Shikhar. Shikhar construction was completed on December 1, 1977. Total height of Shikhar is 28 ft. and different forms of Adishakti idols were installed. Beautiful idol of Mahakali, Mahalaksmi, Saraswati, Mahishasurmardini, Gayitridevi, kamakshi, kanakdurga and ashtalakshmi were installed. East side Shikar Shri Nandavaram Devi’s idol was installed.

Shikhar Kalasrohan (1978)
On the occasion of Kalasrohan Shri Masarganda Narasaraju’s musical program was held on Shri Chowdeshwari Devi Puran and Devi Mahatmya from February 16, 1978 to February 18, 1978. On February 19, 1978, at 3:00 PM, SuvarnKalash parade started from Shri Madavrao Kontam’s residence. Kalash is 4ft and it was made in Kubhkonam Tamilnadu. 100gm of gold layer was put on Kalash. On February 20, 1978, Shri Shrikrishna V Pujari and Rukminibai S Pujari performed Navchandi Homahavan methodical puja. Shri Radhakrushna Joshi was the priest for Homahavan puja. After that at 1:00 PM, Rambagwale Maharaj and Shri Shri Shri Purshottamacharya performed methodical puja and chanting and completed Shikhar Kalasrohan process.

Nandavaram Yatri Nivas. (2008-2012)
Every year Thogatveer Samaj Solapur members attend Nandavaram Jyoti Utsav. Previously members’ family had very difficulties to stay during Nandavaram Jyoti Utsav due to basic needs such as toilet, bathroom etc. were not available. Thogatveer Samaj’s few families generously donated to build Nandavaram Yatri Nivas. In 2008, Nandavaram Grampanchayat gave land for Yatri Nivas. Two big halls and 12 individual rooms with attached bathroom were built. Bhoomi pujan was performed in 2008 and Nandavaram Yatri Nivas construction was completed in March 2012.
